2021 Unified National Examinations have concluded

The 2021 Unified National Examinations have concluded today (30.08.2021). 29,362 entrants have enrolled in various universities throughout the country.

Dr. Sophia Gorgodze, the Director of the National Assessment and Examinations Center

It is my honor to congratulate each and every of them and wish an exciting, successful and productive student life. I would also like to kindly remind them that from the next week they should contact the higher education institutions for administrative purposes to finalize the enrolment procedure.

In 2021, 76% of registered applicants became students. This percentage is almost the same as the last year (75%). Despite the challenges caused by the pandemic, the number of enrolments has not decreased. As for the state funding, a total of 10,769 entrants were funded, of which 6,545 entrants received a state grant: 1,011 entrants received a 100% grant, 1,454% received a 70% grant, and 4,080 entrants received a 50% grant. 4,224 entrants will continue their studies at the state-funded faculties.

As for the competition for different programs, Law, Business Administration, Psychology and Healthcare are in the lead like in previous years. This year, a different trend was also revealed. Popular areas now also include graphic design, performing arts, veterinary medical studies, and computer science. The number of enrollees in the Georgian language foundation program has increased, where representatives of ethnic minorities first master the Georgian language and then continue to study in a specific direction. Compared to the last year, this year about 300 entrants gained the right to continue their studies in these programs.

The examination process in 2021 was the longest due to the pandemic, as every applicant who was absent at the exam with a diagnosis of Covid-19 had an opportunity to be involved in the process after recovery. Despite the prolonged examination process, the National Assessment and Examinations Center did everything possible to ensure that the final announcement of the results was not delayed, which would prevent starting university studies on time.

This year has once again shown us how responsible and civic-minded was each participant in the exams. Due to such attitude and devoted staff the examinations were conducted completely safely amid pandemic. I would like to express my special thanks to each team member of the NAEC. I would also like to sincerely extend my gratitude towards all the agencies that helped us in the process of conducting the exams for a month and a half. The outstanding support of each counterpart was significant to help us overcome the difficulties caused by the pandemic.

Zakaria Giunashvili, the Head of the Research and Psychometrics Group and Giorgi Ratiani, the Coordinator of the Research Group introduced the significant factors identified during the latest international research (PISA, TALIS, TIMSS) that have an impact on students’ achievement and social-emotional development.

“It is crucial to organize such gatherings. Hopefully, todays discussion will encourage education specialists and decision makers to draw more attention to the latest findings of international and national research and plan education policy accordingly. ”

Sophia Gorgodze, the Director of the National Assessment and Examinations Center

The workshop was attended by the First Deputy Minister of Education and Science Ekaterine Dgebuadze, representatives from various educational institutions, as well as teachers and school principals that participated in the research. During the meeting, a discussion was held, which mainly focused on the analysis of the improved achievements of IV grade students in rural schools in Georgia that have been highlighted by Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).

“The increase in results in rural schools was due to the fact that there was a complex approach based on support from the state. Teachers were given an opportunity to listen to subject trainings, at the same time they had the opportunity to include a variety of educational resources in the learning process. It is noteworthy that the culture of teacher cooperation has increased – we share our opinions, even about subject trainings, methods, strategies and we are more focused on the success of a particular student. “

Sophio Kublashvili, the director of Mukhrani №1 public school.

Research is an important direction of the National Assessment and Examinations Center. The center has been involved in international educational research (PISA, PIRLS, TIMSS, TALIS) and conducting national assessments for more than fourteen years.

On June 1-4 the pilot testing was conducted in about 350 schools across Georgia. The process went smoothly. Dr. Sophia Gorgodze, the director of the National Assessment and Examinations Center observed the testing process at School No. 122, in Tbilisi.

The tryout was conducted in electronic format in Georgian Language and Mathematics and was attended by fourth and sixth grade students. Both Georgian Language and Mathematics tests were performed by about 4500 students on each session of the test.

The purpose of the test is to refine the electronic report and open ended questions scoring modules and the testing format so that it meets the needs of each school in particular. Diagnostic assessment will also help schools plan the academic year accordingly.

In November 2020 more than 1000 students from all over Georgia took part in the second tryout of the system where electronic platform as well as the contents of the assignments were tested .

The National Assessment and Examinations Center started working on the project “Assessment for Development” in 2019. Its purpose is to evaluate the achievements of fourth and sixth graders with the help of an electronic platform at the end of the school year in Georgian language and literature (literacy) and mathematics (quantitative literacy).

The results will help students and parents monitor the progress made during the learning process and get information about the strengths and weaknesses of students. This project will enable schools observe the teaching-learning trends both at the individual class level and at the school level in general. It should be noted that the grade points obtained are not reflected in the student’s annual assessment.
