TIMSS is an international assessment of student achievement dedicated to improving teaching and learning in mathematics and science.
The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), an independent, international cooperative of national research institutions and governmental research agencies, implements TIMSS.

Georgia participated in TIMSS 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019. TIMSS generates valuable information about 4th and 8th grade students’ achievement in mathematics and sciences, about their immediate family environment, their teachers, peers, and schools. Participation in the study provides the opportunity to understand how Georgian students are progressing in time, relative to other countries, and how classroom, school, and policy level practices and policies affect student learning.

NAEC is responsible for administering the study locally with the support of school principals and teachers. Around 300 schools, their principals, over 1500 teachers, up to 12 000 students, and their parents participate in every cycle of the study.

NAEC prepares national reports and disseminates them among policy makers and school community members. TIMSS results are discussed at National Education Conferences with teachers, school leaders, education specialists, researchers, and policy makers.
